The International Association of Document Examiners (IADE)

The purpose of the organization is to provide continuous education to document examiners, both students and professional members. We are the only open organization dedicated to approving and providing continuing education on an international level. We will also provide certification to those members who meet our qualifications.

The IADE was founded and incorporated on January 7, 2015 in Maryland by Katherine Koppenhaver. Kathy Carlson is the President of the organization. Beverley East is Vice-President, Wendy Carlson is Secretary and William Smith is Treasurer.

The Scientific Journal of the IADE

The IADE Journal is published yearly and is edited by Katherine Koppenhaver. Members are encouraged to submit articles and research papers to Ms. Koppenhaver.

What is forensic document examination?

It is a forensic discipline that applies scientific and technical practices to the recognition, collection, analysis, and interpretation of written or machine-produced material to determine its authenticity, origin, or authorship

What is a "questioned document"?

A questioned document is any material (such as a will, contract, or check) that conveys a message or contains information that is in dispute in a court of law

What are "exemplars" and how are they used?

Exemplars also called known samples of writing (either collected from normal business courses or requested specifically for comparison) used by examiners to establish a writer's habits and range of variation.

What is an "alteration" in a document?

An alteration is a revision or modification made to a document by physical, chemical, or mechanical means, such as additions, deletions, obliterations, or substitutions

What is "synchronous writing"?

Synchronous writing refers to multiple entries or pages written at one single time rather than at different times, often detected in fraudulent journals or diaries.

What is "disguised writing"?

It is a deliberate attempt by a writer to alter their normal handwriting to prevent recognition, often through changing slant, size, or using block letters
